PRP Treatment- Facts and Myths
Platelet-rich plasma biostimulation (PRP Treatment) is an autologous procedure, i.e. it is performed with blood drawn painlessly from the same patient. It aims to reverse the common signs of skin aging in the facial area, neck and hands. It also seeks to improve some pathologies such as spots, acne (and its sequelae), stretch marks and scars.
There are several myths surrounding this procedure:
“PRP Treatment rejuvenates the skin”
It’s true. Biostimulation with platelet-rich plasma allows to delay the aging process of the skin. It activates cell regeneration, allowing for better skin quality, brighter and more lozana, with better texture, less flaccidity and fewer wrinkles.
“It’s a very well tolerated treatment”
It’s true. Being an autologous treatment (blood is obtained from the patient himself) it does not carry risks of allergies or incompatibility reactions, which makes it a safe procedure for the patient. This procedure, while simple, is performed in an outpatient practice, with a team of medical professionals (including a hematologist doctor), and under extreme quality control conditions, according to procedure standards for handling biological material.
“PRP Treatment is a beneficial treatment”
It’s true. It is recommended when you start to notice that the skin loses collagen and its ability to regene the cell. It can be applied as a preventive treatment, in the case of younger skin, or as a restorative, on older skin. It will be the doctor who ultimately decides when the time is right for its application.
“Idon’t need to have any previous medical check-ups or examinations”
It’s false. It is very important to note that all patients should have a complete medical history and blood test before application to rule out any pre-existing conditions. There are specific contraindications for patients with blood and immune disorders, among other pathologies.
“I can do it as many times as I want”
It’s false. The protocol of application and frequency depends on each patient and the degree of skin aging it presents. In general, it is advised to apply it 2 or 3 times a year, to enhance tissue regeneration. You can then repeat the same routine a year, in order to keep tissue regeneration active.
“After PRP treatment, I can rejoin my work and social activities without problem”
It’s true. After application, people can immediately resume their professional and social life. No marks, scars are generated, nor should rest be kept.
“It also serves to combat cellulite and stretch marks”
It’s true. It is used to treat any pathology that requires tissue regeneration. It is applied by microinjections in the affected areas. By repairing damaged fibers and tissue, it improves the appearance of the skin and regenerates new, better quality cells.
“It can be done at any time of the year”
It’s true. It can be done both in winter, spring or summer, taking into account direct sun exposure.
“Any skin type can be treated with PRP”
It’s false. Skins with acne in activity or medical treatment for a particular pathology cannot be subjected to PRP infiltrations.
“After performing this treatment, no sunscreen is needed”
It’s false. After any medical and/or aesthetic treatment to improve the quality of the skin it is essential to use sunscreen. It is important to raise awareness of the damage caused by the sun, and the need to use sunscreen creams or emulsions (it will vary which product will be used depending on the time of year).
